Va. part of $29M agreement with Toyota

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) —  

Virginia has joined 28 other states in a $29 million agreement with Toyota Motor Corp. over allegations the company concealed safety issues related to unintended acceleration.   In a complaint filed along with the agreement, the states allege Toyota engaged in unfair and deceptive practices when it failed to timely disclose known safety defects with accelerator pedals. The agreement is pending court approval.   State officials say Virginia will receive nearly $739,000 as part of the agreement to resolve consumer protection claims.   Toyota has also agreed to provide improved communication with consumers if other potential safety concerns arise.   The company agreed to pay consumers who incurred out-of-pocket costs following the recall. It expects that those reimbursements will total around $5 million.
