Romney campaigns in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney spoke to voters at a campaign event in Virginia Beach Thursday at Farm Bureau Live.

The rally was originally scheduled for Sunday Oct. 28, but had to be canceled because of Hurricane Sandy. At Thursday's event, Governor Romney urged voters to donate money to families affected by the devastating storm.

Governor Romney outlined his five point plan for creating jobs and spoke about his goal to lower taxes for small business owners. The economy is one of the most important issues for voters.

"Our country is going down, and we need it rescued," one woman told WAVY.com as she was leaving the rally.

The crowd at Thursday's event was noticeably larger and louder than those at previous Romney rallies in Hampton Roads. At times, they broke into a "five more days" chant, describing the time left until Election Day.

Governor Romney spoke directly to military families. And almost right on cue, the sound of freedom came from Navy jets flying overhead. Governor Romney didn't miss a beat.

"I love the sound of those jets," said Governor Romney, as he smiled and pointed at the sky.

He took the opportunity to discuss his plans to expand the Navy, and, when doing so, he referenced a line President Obama used in the last debate.

"You mention the Navy for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916," said President Obama, at the debate. "Well Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets."

"Look - I don't believe the Navy is like bayonets and horses, even though I know we use bayonets and they saved a lot of lives," said Governor Romney Thursday.

But the former Massachusetts governor also emphasized the need to "reach across the aisle," and he promised to do so, if elected.

"I have to get good Democrats and good Republicans to get this country back on track," he said. "And I will."

Election Day is Tuesday November 6.
