City council veteran wins House primary

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A former city council member won Wednesday evening's Democratic firehouse primary to fill the 89th House District seat in the General Assembly.

Daun S. Hester beat Yvonne Allmond, a TowneBank executive.

"I'm just looking for someone looking to represent me, I mean, times are tough out here and you know, we the little man, we need all the help we can get," Portsmouth resident Angelo Crump said.

A line of people wrapped around the block outside of the Norfolk Masonic Temple at 7001 Granby Street during the firehouse primary.

"It's been a wonderful race," Hester said. "It's been challenging as all races are, but I'm just grateful for the turnout today and the many people who came and stood in line to make a difference."

Norfolk funeral home operator Kenny Alexander held the seat until he replaced the late Yvonne Miller in the state Senate.

Hester will be on the Dec. 18 ballot for a special election to fill the seat.
