VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Effective Aug. 1, 2012, Todd C. Davidson, an at-large Virginia Beach School Board member, will no longer be with the board, according to Eileen Cox with Virginia Beach Public Schools.
Davidson was first elected to the board in 2006 and re-elected in November 2010. Cox says a short-term appointment will be named, then there will be a special election in November as part of the ballot. Whoever wins that election will immediately take the seat, instead of waiting until January 2013.
According to vbschools.com, Davidson is the senior pastor of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Virginia Beach and is a former teacher, coach and dean of students for the Norfolk Public Schools.
Davidson is leaving the area Hampton Roads area to take the pastorate of Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, in September, according to a Kathy O'Hara with Virginia Beach Public Schools.
School Board Chairman Daniel D. Edwards described Davidson’s resignation as a “tremendous loss” for the school division. “Dr. Davidson was a stabilizing force on our School Board, always keeping us focused on the greater good of children,” he said.
Davidson said his decision to leave Virginia Beach is "agonizing," but looks forward to community-based services and outreach programs at Antioch Baptist Church.
"There are many life lessons that I learned here and many friendships that I have developed over the years. I will carry these with me when I leave,” he said.
