Ward wins democratic primary

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Chesapeake City Councilwoman and former state Board of Education member Ella Ward has won the Democratic primary to contend for Republican Rep. Randy Forbes' congressional seat this fall.

Forbes is seeking a seventh term from the southeastern Virginia district. He faced a primary challenge Tuesday from GOP challenger Roberta "Bonnie" Girard.

Ward won 85 percent of the vote over fellow Democrat Joe T. Elliott, the pastor of a church in Colonial Heights and the owner of a small business. As of late May, Ward reported less than $25,000 raised and Elliott reported no money raised.

The largely rural district fans out from Chesapeake westward along the North Carolina border and curls around Richmond's southern suburbs.
