It's unfortunate that a man can win such an election on the basis of an attack campaign. I don't know much about Rigell's politics; he may well turn out to be good for the job. But I never had a chance to learn. Every Rigell-endorsed ad I ever saw was about Glenn Nye. In actuality, they weren't even about his opponent. They were about a prominent member of his opponent's registered party. It wasn't enough that Rigell had to go almost exclusively on the attack; he had to attack someone irrelevant to the race at hand, and hope some of the mud splashed on Nye. That campaign embodied everything that is wrong with today's politics. It's important to remember, though, that Franklin Roosevelt did much the same thing. He was elected on an attack campaign, as well, and he turned out all right. So we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
